Lago Nero: A Glacial Lake in the High Apennines
Lago Nero, 51021 Abetone Cutigliano PT, Italy
Set at about 1,730 metres in the upper Sestaione Valley, Lago Nero is a small glacial lake framed by the Alpe delle Tre Potenze and Monte Gomito. Its dark reflections give the lake its name, while the surrounding beech woods, blueberry shrubs and high Apennine landscape make the approach part of the experience.
Reaching the lake
Lago Nero is not accessible by road: every visit involves a mountain walk. The official tourism portal lists approaches from the Sestaione Valley, Val di Luce and Abetone. One classic option follows marked CAI paths from the Forest Botanical Garden area in the Sestaione Valley; another uses the Abetone gondola to Monte Gomito before continuing on foot. Check lift operation and trail conditions before setting out.
What to expect
The lake occupies a natural glacial basin and has no resident fish population. Protected alpine and crested newts live in its waters, so visitors should observe without touching wildlife, entering the water or disturbing the shoreline. Close to the lake stands the CAI Lago Nero mountain shelter; opening and overnight arrangements should always be confirmed directly with CAI Pistoia.
Plan safely
Wear hiking footwear, carry water, warm and waterproof layers, and allow enough daylight for the return. Weather can change quickly at this altitude. Snow, ice and poor visibility can turn an otherwise straightforward route into a serious mountain outing; in winter, go only with suitable equipment and experience or with a qualified guide. Mobile coverage should not be assumed.
Respect the mountain
Stay on marked paths, take all litter away, keep dogs under close control, and avoid picking plants or disturbing amphibians. This is a fragile high-altitude habitat rather than a serviced park. The most rewarding visit is quiet, self-sufficient and low-impact.
