Vellano’s “Publio Mine”

The Historical Ethnographic Museum of Miners and Quarrymen—locally known as La Miniera di Publio—preserves the working memory of Vellano, one of the Ten Castella of Valleriana. At roughly 600 metres above sea level, this small mountain museum explains how quarrying and stone-working shaped the village’s identity.

Pietra serena and local craftsmanship

The hills around Vellano supplied pietra serena, the grey sandstone widely used for paving, architectural frames, bridge parapets and decorative work across Tuscany. The museum honours the miners, quarrymen and stonemasons whose demanding labour made Vellano known well beyond the valley.

What you will find inside

The collection includes quarrying and mining tools, machinery, worked stone, minerals and documentary material. Full-scale reconstructions and visual or sound effects help visitors understand working conditions underground, while a specialist library supports deeper research into mines and quarries. Guided interpretation may be available by arrangement.

Planning your visit

Published sources currently provide inconsistent opening information. Contact the museum directly before travelling to confirm access, guided visits and the correct timetable. The building is in a mountain village reached by winding roads; allow extra travel time and combine the museum with a walk through Vellano rather than scheduling a rushed stop.

Why it is worth the detour

This is an unusually personal heritage museum: its value lies not in monumental displays but in the tools, knowledge and stories of a community built around stone. It pairs especially well with the Pescia Paper Museum in Pietrabuona, creating a day devoted to Valleriana’s traditional industries.
