The Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta stands on Piazza Cavour, just inside the historic walls of Massa. Traditionally associated with an eighth-century foundation, it developed beside a spring to serve the baptismal needs of a wide rural territory. By 1260 the parish church held jurisdiction over eleven sacred buildings, and during the fourteenth century it was incorporated into Massa’s expanded fortifications.

The building retains traces of its Romanesque past, especially in the lower part of the bell tower, while a major Renaissance transformation created the present three-nave interior and the elegant three-arched portico. The apse dome is attributed to Gherardo Mechini, an architect who worked for the Grand Duke of Tuscany.

Inside, visitors can see paintings by Sebastiano Vini and Giovanni Maria Butteri, a fourteenth-century polychrome wooden Madonna and Child, and glazed terracotta associated with the workshop of Benedetto Buglioni. Goldsmith work, textiles and other objects connected with the church are preserved in the nearby San Michele Museum.

The church remains an active place of worship, so access may vary around religious services. Check current conditions before travelling, dress respectfully and avoid interrupting worship. The steep lanes and stone paving of Massa’s historic centre may present accessibility challenges.
