Church of Madonna di Piazza, Cutigliano
Via Giacomelli 1, 51024 Cutigliano, Abetone Cutigliano (PT), Italy
A few steps from Cutigliano’s historic town-hall square, the Church of Madonna di Piazza is an intimate place of worship whose modest exterior conceals an important work of Renaissance devotional art.
Inside the single-nave church is a glazed-terracotta altarpiece traditionally attributed to Benedetto Buglioni and dated to around 1510. It depicts the Madonna and Child with Saint Anthony the Abbot and Saint Bernardino of Siena, combining luminous colour with the refined craftsmanship associated with the Florentine Della Robbia tradition.
The church complements a visit to the nearby Palace and Loggia of the Captains, adding the religious history of the village to its civic architecture. It remains an active place of worship, so opening may follow parish services or special events; visitors should check locally and enter respectfully.
