See route

Set high in the Tuscan Apennines, the Church of San Leopoldo is closely linked to the road that transformed Abetone into a strategic mountain settlement. The church was completed in 1782, shortly after the Grand Ducal route between Tuscany and Modena opened, and was named in honour of Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo.

Designed by Bernardo Fallani, the building has a restrained mountain character: a sober façade, rectangular openings and a square bell tower that stands out against the surrounding forest and peaks. Its position at more than 1,000 metres above sea level made it a spiritual landmark for residents and travellers crossing the pass.

The church remains an active parish. Visitors are welcome to appreciate its architecture and historical setting, but access may vary around services and religious celebrations. Please dress respectfully and avoid disturbing worship.
