Popiglio Sacred Art Museum
Piazza della Chiesa 1, 51020 Popiglio, San Marcello Piteglio (PT), Italy
Why visit
Set in the mountain village of Popiglio, this compact museum route combines architecture, local devotion and museum-quality works of art. Its heart is the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta, completed in 1271 and still recognisable by its restrained Romanesque stone exterior. The visit is especially rewarding for travellers interested in the cultural life of the Pistoia Mountains beyond the best-known towns.
The church and its masterpieces
The church was enriched during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when the Vannini family—originally from Popiglio and established in Rome—donated important works. Highlights include the historic pipe organ by the papal organ builder Giuseppe Testa, paintings by Sebastiano Vini, and a Crucifixion by Giacinto Gimignani. The contrast between the medieval fabric and the later Roman Baroque collection gives the interior its distinctive character.
A three-part museum route
The sacred-art itinerary extends across the parish church, the Diocesan Museum and a nearby educational centre. The museum preserves liturgical silver, vestments, processional objects and furnishings gathered from churches across the Pistoia Mountains. The educational centre in Via delle Corti introduces traditional textile techniques through hands-on activities, particularly suitable for families when workshops are scheduled.

The museum normally opens on selected dates in July and August rather than every day.
