MuFer — Francesco Ferrucci Museum
Piazza Francesco Ferrucci 133, 51028 Gavinana, San Marcello Piteglio (PT), Italy
Why visit
MuFer, the Francesco Ferrucci Museum, tells the story of the Florentine commander who died at Gavinana during the battle of 3 August 1530. Hidden in the Pistoia Mountains, it connects Renaissance military history with the memory and identity of the village where the decisive events took place.
A renewed museum
The museum reopened in November 2025 after a major restoration. Its redesigned route spreads across two exhibition floors, combining historic objects with reconstructions, multimedia content and immersive installations. The building is now accessible to visitors with disabilities.
What you will discover
The collection explores Ferrucci, the Florentine Republic and the Battle of Gavinana through documents, weapons, armour, coins, paintings, family memorabilia and a scale reconstruction of the opposing forces. The museum also preserves links with Massimo D’Azeglio and the later transformation of Ferrucci into a national symbol.
Explore Gavinana too
The visit works especially well as the starting point for a walk through the village. Piazza Francesco Ferrucci, the monument by Emilio Gallori and other places connected with the battle turn the surrounding streets into an open-air extension of the museum. The official MuFer website includes historical itineraries and a digital treasure-hunt experience.
