Montevettolini Medieval Village
Piazza Orazio Bargellini, 51015 Montevettolini, Monsummano Terme (PT), Italy
A fortified village above Valdinievole
Montevettolini is a compact medieval hilltop village on the southern slopes of Montalbano. Its stone lanes, gateways and small squares preserve the character of a settlement that began as a fortified castle and later became closely connected with the Medici.
Start in Piazza Bargellini
Piazza Orazio Bargellini is the best reference point for exploring on foot. From here, wander through the historic core, notice the former town hall and religious buildings, and enjoy the changing views over the Valdinievole countryside.
The Medici connection
The Medici Villa, commissioned after 1597 by Ferdinando I deβ Medici, gives the village an unusually grand historical presence. It resembles a fortress as much as a country residence and became an important landmark for the surrounding territory.
Plan a respectful visit
The historic centre is best experienced slowly and on foot. The villa remains privately owned and is generally admired from outside, so visitors should respect private property and local access signs. The local information point is based in the former town hall in Piazza Bargellini; contact details are included in this entry.
