A Medici fortress away from the busiest streets

The Fortezza di Santa Barbara stands near the old city walls and offers a quieter, more spacious view of Pistoia’s history. Unlike the monuments around Piazza del Duomo, this is a place of military architecture, brick ramparts and defensive geometry.

The fortress was reshaped in the Renaissance under Medici rule and still preserves the austere character of a defensive complex. Its walls, towers and open areas make it an evocative stop for travellers who enjoy historic places beyond the most crowded routes.

It is a good choice for a slow walk, for photography and for adding variety to a sightseeing itinerary. The atmosphere is calm, slightly hidden and very different from the heart of the city.
