A landmark of care, art and memory

The Ospedale del Ceppo is one of Pistoia’s most recognisable historic buildings. Founded in the Middle Ages, it later became a major civic institution and a symbol of the city’s long tradition of care and public life.

Its most famous feature is the elegant Renaissance loggia decorated with a colourful glazed terracotta frieze. The scenes, linked to charity and the works of mercy, make the façade both beautiful and deeply meaningful.

Today the complex is an excellent stop for travellers interested in history, architecture and unusual museums. It also connects naturally with Pistoia Sotterranea, the underground route that reveals a hidden side of the city beneath the former hospital area.
